What's a .dat file extension

Question: Whats a .dat file? I have a file called gmtim.dat and It wont open up. Is something wrong here?

Answer: Well I can say that a .dat file is not proprietary. (It does not belong to a specific company) Most .dat files are generic files. .dat stands for data really.

You can open the file with notepad, wordpad, or any other text editor you have. If you look to see what folder its in... that probably tell you what application it belongs to.

There should be no reason to open the file unless that is you just want to tinker. If you make changes to the file we would suggest not saving the changes. It may mess up whatever application its associated with.

Before you try anything you should think about doing a free scan for .dat related registry errors. This will ensure your computer is ready to precede.
